An exceptional chaise longue by John Louis Graz, circa 1950s, showcasing the sculptural elegance of mid-century modern design. Crafted with a gracefully curved wooden frame and inset woven raffia seat and backrest, the piece exudes both organic warmth and architectural refinement. The sinuous lines and tapered legs create a dynamic silhouette that balances comfort with artistry. A striking example of Graz\'s mastery in merging modernist form with handcrafted detail, this piece captures the refined sophistication of 20th-century design. From a private collection. Dimensions: 31.5\"h x 26\"w x 65\"length x 16\"seat height x 20\"seat width x 41\"seat depth x 6\"arm height x 18\"back height.
John Louis Graz (1891-1980) was a Swiss-born artist and designer who became a leading figure in introducing Modernist and Art Deco design to Brazil. Trained at the Geneva School of Fine Arts and the School of Fine Arts in Munich, Graz brought European avant-garde principles to Brazilian interiors after emigrating in 1920. He debuted in the historic Semana de Arte Moderna (Modern Art Week) of 1922, a pivotal event in Brazil\'s modernist movement, and later collaborated with architect Gregori Warchavchik on the celebrated Casa Modernista in Sao Paulo (1930). Graz was among the first to produce Bauhaus-inspired tubular furniture in Brazil, noted for its geometric precision and handcrafted refinement. His innovative approach to integrating furniture, lighting, and decorative arts earned him recognition as a pioneer of Brazilian modern design, merging European modernism with local materials and sensibilities.
